History
The construction of the chapel in 1911 preceded the opening of the parish in 1912. The church base, built in 1914, was replaced by a new church erected on the same foundations in 1923. The church burned on January 39, 1936. The parish is divided and Bishop Louis Rhéaume founded the parish of Notre Dame de Lourdes. In 1937 a new granite church was built on the ruins of the 1923 Saint Antoine de Padoue church. On December 10, 1938, the Diocese of Haileybury was divided to form four new dioceses. Saint Antoine de Padoue became the cathedral for the Diocese of Timmins in 1939. Renovated by Bishop Jacques Landriault, it was solemnly consecrated in 1982. After the closure of the parishes in Timmins, the parishes of the Nativity of our Lord of Timmins and Saint Alphonsus of Schumacher joined to form in 2005 the new English-speaking parish Saint Anthony of Padua Cathedral Parish.
